All these Americans dreaming of a time when factory jobs were great don’t realize that what was great wasn’t the work itself, it was the good wages and fat pensions, amazing benefits (thank you unions!), and a marginal tax rate that meant we could fund higher education (which meant affordable tuition), fund roads and public schools and hospitals and parks and so many other things. That’s how we became the powerhouse of the world.
