Will AI Put Photographers Out of Work?
I’ve been turning this question over for months. Not as a technological curiosity, but as something that affects me directly.
I’ve been a professional photographer for more than twenty years. I’ve seen digital photography make the darkroom obsolete. I’ve seen the smartphone empty event photographers’ client lists. I’ve seen stock photo libraries drive stock prices down. Every time a new technology appeared, someone said that this was it, that this was the end.
And every time, there were reasons to think they were right.
Artificial intelligence is different. Not in the sense that it is more dangerous — although it can be — but in the sense that the debate it generates is usually either too alarmist or too reassuring. Those who say nothing will happen haven’t seen what is already happening. Those who say it’s all over are not entirely right either.
In this series, I’m going to try to think out loud about this. Without certainties. Without selling fear or false reassurance. With the perspective of someone who has spent decades in the trade and who also works with scientific and forensic imagery — two fields where image accuracy is not an ae…
