I never came to understand (I have grown to hate the usage of "realize" to mean anything other than "to make real") it that way. The book is a pro-fascist pitch, and Verhoeven can say what he wants about his totally fucking rad movie, but it won't change the fact that it couldn't escape its origin to send a different message.
