I need to nerd about this. m4a is Apple's naming convention for music inside an mp4 container, m4b is audiobooks, and m4r is ringtones. You can create an audio file with AAC or ALAC encoding with mp4 and literally just change the file extension.
Also "non-evil Audible" is a heck of a way to describe things
