OpenAI turns model inference into a typed decision service

OpenAI made its Decisions API generally available on October 22, introducing a dedicated /v1/decisions endpoint for typed choices, probabilities and scores.

What is actually new is the interface and operating model: rather than returning prose for software to interpret, the API narrows outputs for production workflows. OpenAI says it adapted GPT-6 Luna for faster, lower-cost inference, with claimed improvements of up to 10 times; documentation lists JSON and image inputs, prompt caching and up to 400 questions per request.

The open question is whether this packaging can match specialized decision models such as TypeSafe’s Jev. Evaluations found Jev strong on classification but raised concerns about calibration and performance under noisy labels, low-resource languages and other data conditions. For buyers, is millisecond-scale throughput enough if the confidence score is not reliably calibrated? https://spaisee.com/article/openai-s-decisions-api-pushes-ai-toward-millisecond-choices
