Every time I see some freak climate-collapse induced rainfall expressed as mm I rush to convert it to inches, then I don’t believe the answer and check it again and again because close to 20 inches all at once wtf. Same for temperatures in celsius. Needing to do that so often ends up interrupting my constant staring at the raw immeasurable obvious with these tiny, artificial, almost ritual moments of human-scale suspense. So the numbers feel like a form of palliative. An escape from seeing. Except for the body counts.
