The way I heard it told is that the commies had a commanding role in overthrowing the Shah and while they were f@cking around with the west with the hostages they had taken Khomeini was running around solidifying the Iranian right. By the time the commies figured out what was happening it was too late. I've not looked into the veracity of the story, but it does align with the fact that Big Nose never forgave the Persian Right for reclaiming what they had stolen.
