-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

BEFORE AND NOW: CASA BARCO
(SHIP HOUSE)
Arcos Street 4890, at the corner of Vilela Street, Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷

This distinctive Streamline Moderne residence was the home of Vito Dumas (1900–1965), the legendary Argentine sailor known as El Navegante Solitario (“The Lone Navigator”), who sailed solo around the world in 1942 during the Second World War.

The house was renowned for its striking nautical design, with a façade shaped like a ship’s bow, curved walls and porthole-like windows.

A remarkable example of nautical-inspired Art Deco and Streamline Moderne, its aerodynamic forms evoked the ocean liners of the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting the era’s fascination with modern transportation, technology and movement.

Although the building still stands today, extensive renovations have dramatically altered its original appearance, and its iconic bow-shaped façade has disappeared.
