Motorola Mobility had a lot more revenue at the time of the split but wasn't as profitable and was considered to be far more risky. Mass market mobile devices are a much different business from mainly doing business based on long term government and enterprise contracts. That's why the companies were split in the first place. The trademark was more important to the larger mass market company and it was also probably seen as more likely to launch new classes of products.
