I'm wondering if the story will turn out to be: munitions explosion starts small prairie fire, extreme winds turn it into larger fire that spreads to a gas line/well, causing the explosion & out of control fire.
Given how sudden the winds came on, I could see that happening as an unexpected disaster. But if they were setting off munitions directly in the vicinity of gas infrastructure, that is a serious planning failure.
