I have been shocked at how bad some people who have, apparently, passed the bar exam actually are. The kind of skills that I'd expect to be absolutely core to being a lawyer of any kind (such as stringing together coherent English sentences, following a chain of logic through a piece of prose, basic critical thinking skills, basic understanding of their legal obligations for privileged communication, and so on) completely missing.
I've worked with some amazing lawyers in a few contexts, but the profession seems to have the same broad range of ability as jobs that don't require any professional qualifications.
