George gets us only so far.

The character of rent changes when what is rented is not land but a reproducible, reconfigurable informational and relational environment. Such spaces can be deployed and altered rapidly, permitting experiments in designs that shorten attention spans, encourage drive-by community, and heighten fragmentation and polarization.

It is one thing to rent the space where a meat-packer turns by-products into sausage; another to rent spaces where the by-products of human interaction are collected, commodified, analyzed, regularized, and fed back into further interaction.

Renters’ activity helps produce what they rent while yielding extraordinary information about them and enabling Big Brother levels of surveillant control. The same infrastructure can interpose itself within, or simulate aspects of, fundamental human interaction.

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.
