2026 Book 4: The Nueces River by Margie Crisp. It looks like a coffee table book, but while there are photos and illustrations, it’s really a very thorough look at the entire river from its springs at the southern margins of the Edwards plateau, mile by mile to Nueces Bay near Corpus Christi. She interviews ranchers, has lots of historical background about early settlers and changes to the river’s flow and the surrounding landscape that it feeds, as well of lots of asides about canoeing sections and all the wildlife and plant life she encounters. The further reading alone at the end is about 400 books long. I really enjoyed this trip, because I thought I knew the river pretty well, but this expanded my view drastically. If you’re a Texan and interested in nature writing, I highly recommend.
