Numerical annoyance: "60 percent higher than the previous record". It takes me a little bit of thought to work out they mean a factor of 1.6 ie multiply the previous record by 1.6 and you get the new record. But this is an easy one. We have 394 percent higher... in something I was reading this morning. It turned out they had got confused and they meant 294 percent. I suppose this means 2.94 times? Or is it 294 times, okay probably not but what does 60 percent lower mean? Is it 0.6 or 0.4 times?
I feel adding "percent" in there just makes an extra step in the arithmetic, and obfuscates. Who's with me?
