I lived in a Chicago bungalow for half of my childhood. We didn't have much of an attic -- hardly enough space to stand upright. We mostly used it for storage. My grandparents lived in two-story Chicago bungalows. In fact almost everyone I knew from my old neighborhood (Portage Park) lived in bungalows.
