A brief thought about #hamradio: Forget everything else about it, the core of the hobby is information. I’ve always been fascinated by ways of moving information from A to B without having to make use of other people’s infrastructure. More than “talking to people” or “prepping” or all that bunk the ARRL pushes about “patriotism and public service”, the singular pleasure in amateur radio is finding new and interesting ways to reach out across the ether and be heard. Some of the hardest earned contacts in history have involved nothing more than an exchange of callsigns and maybe a signal report. Whether it’s scraping up a weak Morse signal from the noise to a point where you can copy it, or getting a faint voice responding to your call on SSB or demodulating a data packet acknowledging receipt of your data packet, that flickering spark of information being transmitted has been the driving force of the hobby since it began. QSL!
