I've played all of them and disliked almost everything recent. 32 years old and this is still the best darn Metroid game ever made and still among the absolute best metroidvanias altogether. It never should have gone 3D and it sure as heck never should have gone 2.5D.

I was just trying out that Metroid Prime Origins (a 2D demake that actually made it to completion staying quiet so they wouldn't get nuked) and it just isn't the same. Free/semi-free aiming, going back to 8-bit, etc etc just doesn't work. But I'm still the most annoyed at Nintendo's own Metroid 2 remake. (Ironic as heck some fan just throws something together in Game Maker of all things and it beats the living daylights out of Nintendo's own remake for actual playability and enjoyability.)
