Removing Prince Gavran -- the young man who is the true heir to the throne -- would leave gaping holes in a story which plays out over three books.
Gavran only appears in a few scenes near the beginning of Book 1, is totally absent from Book 2, and doesn't actually have all that much to do in Book 3, but he is vital to the plot of all three novels.
