I just finished re-watching Generations. One thing really bugs me about Picard's experience in the Nexus, and yet I think the writers got it exactly right. The children around the Christmas tree are an abstraction of perfect children. His imagined wife is an abstraction of a wife. (As much so as the Doctor's initial holo-family on Voyager before B'elanna's edits.) Here the Nexus has handed Picard what he's most been wanting, a loving family, and rather than getting down on the floor to play with the kids with their new toys and actually experience _being_ a parent, he's sitting outside the group waiting for these abstractions of kids to come up and politely thank him for the gifts he didn't even watch them open. He probably doesn't even know the names of any of the kids other than René, the only one who isn't an abstraction, and that doesn't bother him. I think the writers got this right, since real Picard had not had kids and had hardly interacted with any, and certainly didn't know what parenting is like. At that moment in his life, after the loss of real René, what he wanted was the abstraction of a family, not a real one, and that in itself is sad to me. #StarTrek
