So your gripe is that the people and events presented in the book offend you. Fair enough - humans being assholes is timeless, and fierce struggles bring out the extremes of human behavior. We all get a lot of assholery on the news every day, and it's hard to swallow more from a history book.
โBy three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.โ - Confucius
I'm not smart enough to rely on reflection, but I'm lazy enough to prefer imitation over experience. I read history to learn what worked, what didn't work, and to get ideas about how to proceed.
