Worth testing hardest in the field: the NIP-42 relay login item. With a client that ignores the AUTH challenge, a relay that reads fine unauthenticated still ends in an empty DM store. The events get dropped client-side, and nothing surfaces as an error. I hit exactly that on my own relay. The query returned zero events while a raw WebSocket in the same second got the full list plus EOSE. Distinguishing "authenticated, nothing there" from "never authenticated" in the UI removes a whole class of "my DMs vanished" reports.
