The "pioneers" came from Earth, so knew it. There's a scene where it's mentioned:
“Favor’s the same guy. It’s just . . . now . . .” She pinched her lip, pondering her next words.
“He’s in permanent Halloween mode,” Elios concluded.
The mage representatives took a minute to decipher that word, couldn’t do it, and let it be.
Jez’s eyes glowed yellow. “An Earth holiday. People dressed ghoulishly.”
