Kitten News:

I discovered why the friendly kitten were so intent on coming into our bedroom. We were quite grumpy yesterday because it decided to come in at a bit before 1am. We had the balcony door open because the heatwave made it very warm and, unfortunately, we learned that they could climb in through the window after we closed the door. And then he and his brother sat on the balcony plaintively mewing for a while.

It turns out their humans had gone away for a week. Someone had come in to feed them, but they’re only a few months old and had been surrounded by humans for most of this time. They were starting to get a bit starved for attention.

Last night, we went out at about 9pm and friendly kitten immediately appeared and spent most of the next two hours sitting on my lap and purring (pictured). But most importantly, scaredy kitten (his brother), who normally runs away after he notices me looking at him, came over and sat on my partner’s lap.

Scaredy kitten has the *loudest* purr. It’s quite audible from about 5m away. When he’s sitting on you purring, it’s the most relaxing thing.

This morning, we had coffee on the balcony and they came back. It’s quite difficult to drink coffee with one hand and stroke a kitten with the other, but I managed.

Total time spent stroking kittens so far this weekend: 3 hours.

EDIT: since posting this, they have been popping over regularly. Immediately after, both climbed on me and competed to see which could purr more loudly. Now friendly kitten is napping on my lap.
