I think the concept of mourning clothes is actually pro-social. It allows the bereaved to exist in public life without needing to explain their emotional state to every person they encounter. It allows those who encounter the bereaved to make decisions about how they're going to interact (or not interact, if that's kinder to both parties) with them.

Maybe this is controversial, but I also think pet/animal mourning clothes is a good idea. Something that's not the same as human mourning clothes, but says, "I could cry seemingly at random, it has nothing to do with you. I was thinking about my recently departed creature companion."
