Starting as a low-ranking horseman in the Lahore Darbar, he distinguished himself through courage and tactical skill at the sieges of Multan (1818), Kashmir (1819), and Peshawar. Recognizing his leadership, Maharaja Ranjit Singh personally applied the royal mark (Raj Tilak) to Gulab Singh’s forehead at Akhnoor in 1822, making him the hereditary Raja of Jammu.
