NASA’s Terra satellite captured Iceberg A-81 near South Georgia on October 20, after the Antarctic iceberg moved north from the Weddell Sea into the Scotia Sea. The roughly 1,550-square-kilometer berg calved from the Brunt Ice Shelf in January 2023, traveled along the coast with the clockwise Weddell Gyre, reached the Antarctic Peninsula by May 2026, and then continued toward the remote South Atlantic island.
A-81’s progress slowed in late October as it appeared to bump along the edge of South Georgia’s shallow underwater shelf. The region has slowed or stopped other large icebergs, including A-23A in 2025. NASA says A-81 is one of several recent large bergs from Brunt; A-83 remains intact and is following northward. The observations help track the movement and breakup of major Antarctic icebergs.
