I'm only an amateur but I'll share this: For my first full marathon, I just started running longer and longer distances. (Sidenote: I started running once my health allowed me to do so.) And when I reached approx. 30 km (+/- 3, really don't remember now:-)) I deemed myself more or less ready. And I was right -- a few days later I made my first 42.2 km in 5 hours minus one minute, at the Sofia WizzAir Marathon. :)
