Do you use the hCaptcha feature? I don’t because I do not want to send personal information of my potential users to a US-company. It is sad there are no alternatives available in Mastodon (EU-based or self-hosted) without tinkering the code and that this is only used at the email verification step. I know there are plans to change this, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a high-priority for the Mastodon team (it should, as it breaches GDPR).
Anyway, did you try it out, do you find it effective? I hear a lot of bots know how to bypass it anyway.
