Recovery is a matter of restoring a backup, no matter how complex the file system is.
And it only dramatically increases the reliability until it doesn't. FAT is a dead-simple file system, and you don't have to dig very deep to find stories of files on people's FAT volumes disappearing or getting trashed following a power cut.
