When I see people pursuing a bizarre goal by nonsensical means, I tend to wonder if the means are an unacknowleged end in themselves. (Cf. the Iraq War.) Here are a few possible reasons, all more plausible to me than “necessity”, for the people behind OpenAI+friends to overspend:

- drive away competition with shock and awe
- capture regulators, media, VCs, and other ecosystem participants
- enrich themselves personally
- make themselves feel important
