I want to talk about imperfect writing for a moment. I recently locked on to a series that is, on a technical level, not always great. It breaks several "rules". It's not an original concept at its base. I wince at some of the "wrong words" moments. But.
BUT.
The story is so damn fascinating, the span so large, the complexity so intriguing, that I'm hooked anyway.
It's called "The Wandering Inn" by Pirateaba. Basically, humans from Earth are involuntarily transported into a fantasy world that runs on RPG rules. Literally. Like, the characters level up, and have classes and skills. And they know it; it's a big social cred thing. There are dungeons that regenerate monsters and treasure.
The Earth humans have a huge impact on this medieval world. Some immediately (if locally), some over time, but Earth tech seeps in little by little, and the world changes.
The story ranges across five war torn continents, explores themes of found family, redemption, rebellion, culture clashes, coming of age, and so much more. It started out as a web serial and became an ebook series when the reader base got huge. You can read it for free, but I like the ebooks so I can adjust the type size.
There are 15 books so far. And listen, I'm a fast reader, okay? But it took me the weeks to get through all fifteen, and I've been BINGING them. Like I said, I'm addicted. And I promptly went to the web site to continue reading instead of waiting for the next ebook..(more)
