Upon leaving Chรขteau de Peyrepertuse bound for Carcassonne we took the D14, a narrow winding backroad between hills cloaked in forest & meadows, intermittently punctuated with small villages. One such village is Bugarach, on the outskirts of which is a 700m path to Pont Romain, a single-arch stone bridge across a limestone basin on the Roman road linking the village to Rennes-les-Bains (๐ท1). Although original was probably Gallo-Roman, it was destroyed in 1992 by flooding but faithfully restored the following year. What caught our eye was the trailside orchids, 3 of which were new to us. All native, first up is Neotinea ustulata | the ๐ฅ burnt-tip orchid, which can be found up to 2,400m elevation in the mountains of central & southern Europe (๐ท2). The aptly-named Serapias lingua | ๐
tongue orchid is found throughout the Mediterranean (๐ท3). Ophrys scolopax | the woodcock orchid is recognisably a ๐ bee orchid given its morphology (๐ท4); it can be found in both the Mediterranean & Middle East. We also re-identified Orchis mascula | the early-purple orchid.

๐ซ๐ท #france #occitanie ๐ช๐บ #europe ๐ #travel ๐ #camperVan #nomad #roadTrip #vanLife ๐๏ธ #roman ๐ธ #bloomScrolling

https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/116/523/104/013/158/839/original/2dd34d9ff30528f1.jpeg
https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/116/523/104/462/621/382/original/99f7942ca569d533.jpeg
https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/116/523/104/897/487/249/original/0e7896b421317166.jpeg
https://o.mastodon.nz/media_attachments/files/116/523/105/392/886/336/original/6b8e42b67236cf8a.jpeg",
