Medusa is a byword for a hideously ugly woman who could turn men to stone with a single glance. In reality*, she was seduced/raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple, and then punished for this ‘insult’ by Athena with the full snakes-for-hair, turns-people-to-stone thing. She hides herself away until beheaded by a passing Perseus.
