Cherry-picking here! This proves my intuition about text: you only get better by reading a bunch of different stuff. If you only read genre fiction, you will be good at reading genre fiction. If you only read pop science, you will be good at reading pop science. I suspect this is the reason why some folk hate fiction, and others hate non-fiction. But whatever your flavour, you will struggle with a literary work (fiction or non-fiction). And you will only enjoy those after reading a bunch of them. How do I know? I’m projecting: it’s what happened to me.

But then I wonder: isn’t this what college should have taught these folks?

I’m assuming of course the post is being honest about what the paper says. I have other papers to read 😅 https://kittenbeloved.substack.com/p/college-english-majors-cant-read
