Not a chance. SMS were charged per message, you had a monthly quota. RCS wasn't a thing, they just charged for you to use some network maintenance feature that turned out to be useful...
Attaching stuff to txt is something recent, MMS was introduced ~2002 and it was even more expensive. Dunno in the USA, but here in south america it was prohibitive
