Europe is certainly colonized by idiocracy - but that doesn't mean Russia would have no interest in it.
Russia's interest could be as simple as:
1. Put things in order (and kill anyone who try to stop you)
2. Enjoy fabulous wealth from the productivity of native Europeans
That would potentially be a better outcome for the average European, but it would be very bad for the EU and its golems, so the shrieking is of course endless.
However, they also do have something of a point - Russia is a poor country not just because they are abused by NATO, but also because Putin doesn't want anyone like an Elon Musk to emerge from Russia because such a person would be a threat to his power. Russia has always been paranoid of anyone having a pot to piss in, going as far back as the Czars. So it's fair of Europeans to not want to be governed by Russia...
