I've been mildly obsessed with early Iceland culture ever since I read this blog post about lex talionis / an eye for an eye, which drew on medieval Iceland to make the case that vengeance wasn't all bad and had some advantages over modern society: https://scholars-stage.org/vengeance-as-justice-passages-i-highlighted-in-my-copy-of-eye-for-an-eye/
Hearing that modern Iceland is pacifist is also a fascinating development! Now I want to read more about how it got there.
