I was reading about the regulatory gray zones and neobank collapses in the US and Europe, and it got me thinking, why don’t we talk more about our system? South Africa’s banking sector isn’t just solid for an emerging market, it's really a global benchmark.
We hear a lot about South Africa’s economic hurdles, but our banking system is world-class and doesn’t get nearly enough airtime.
The World Economic Forum consistently ranks South Africa among the very best for bank soundness and financial market development, along with Hong Kong and Singapore.
Independent reviews, like those from the Lafferty Group, have crowned our commercial banking sector as the most sustainable and capital-strong in the world.
While the US and Europe have grappled with neobank collapses, regulatory loopholes, and taxpayer bailouts, South Africa’s "Twin Peaks" model (SARB, PA, and FSCA) has kept our financial system rock-solid. So much so that our banks didn't need a single cent of bailout money during the 2008 global financial crisis, and today's digital-first players are held to the exact same rigorous capital reserve and auditing standards as the traditional giants. 🇿🇦🏦
