so this year marks 10 years since I came out publicly as trans - back then, it seemed as if we were making great progress towards acceptance and inclusion for all people as a society, not just queer people, and although it was still a bit frightening, it felt safe to share myself with the world
fast forward 10 years, and things not only feel less accepting and inclusive, but much less safe, for everyone
I fear, not just for my own safety, but for that of my brothers and sisters also included in the LGBTQIA+ alphabet
I fear for our jobs, our housing, our acceptance in the greater communities for which we are part, but I also fear for our physical safety
If one segment of the population can be vilified, erased, or attacked, it is not difficult to see that other segments or groups could be next - I fear for their safety as well
Although it will be difficult to celebrate, and say, "Happy Pride!" without the specter of this fear, I will do so with as much enthusiasm and defiance I can muster, not just for myself, but for those who may not have the strength to do so themselves.
