The reason it's frame this way, as "there are 5 separate Americas" is that the way of life and regionalism are different enough across them to make living there a wholly separate experience from living in any of the other regions. So when someone says "in America, we do..." they are actually just referring to one of five regional lifestyles and viewpoints - each of which being distinct from the other to make them essentially a "separate but related country."
