Why are X and TikTok still allowed to operate in Germany with so little effective restraint?
Some progressives may answer: because freedom of expression is sacred here. But it isn’t absolute, and these platforms are not neutral public squares. Their algorithms amplify racism, xenophobia, homophobia, anti-immigrant propaganda, and other forms of hate because outrage is profitable.
My suspicion is simpler: those with the power to act do not consider this machinery sufficiently threatening, perhaps because much of the ideology it promotes is already tolerated within the political mainstream and by a large part of society.
