New Doctor Who plot: a handful of Silurians disguised themselves as humans in the 1800s and 1900s and created the fossil fuel industry as a way to get homo sapiens to geo-engineer the planet back to a Jurassic climate. They hadn't counted on us coming up with cheap solar power, so after some debate, a few put on flesh masks and "invented" AI to make sure we'd keep building gas turbines long enough to get the +3°C they were aiming for.
