Surely that depends on how many hours you are supposed to be dedicating to it? Remember that academic *study* - and PhD is still study - is aimed primarily at early adulthood, and yes these days students are expected to supplement their upkeep during study, with additional paid work. (I'm not endorsing the view, but that is pretty much how it works.)
