Mainstream churches became integral to society. Despite the abuses and belief in supernatural nonsense they are also part of the glue that keeps society together.

Rationality alone seems to be not enough for many. Apart from ideals and ideologies people seem to need beliefs in mystery and hope of something better after death.

Remove organised religion and those people turn to woo and lose their anchor in society. Perhaps with accountability religion is preferable to that?
