Machines make mistakes. Humans make mistakes. The question is: which make more mistakes, cause more deaths/injuries, have worse worst-case scenarios - remember when NORAD's defence systems thought that the moon was an incoming batch of Soviet ICBMs? Or the Soviet Union's radar almost had the same result (thank-you LtCol Stanislav Petrov for correctly judging the situation)? Or when the US Navy shot down Iran Air Flight 655?

Individual incidents such as a Waymo blocking an EMS make headlines. I'm much more interested in the overall statistics, boring though they may be. (And I'll leave you and Brad Templeton to argue the details, if that's what you want to do; but from what I've seen, Waymo makes fewer mistakes than human drivers, on *aggregate*) (Tesla is another story, of course)

PS: I agree that there needs to be a robust discussion of safeguards; but reporting alarmist incidents doesn't contribute to that discussion.
