Regarding PhD student positions in Sweden, I don't agree. There are very few positions nowadays, and thus it's much more difficult to be admitted. There was a rule change a while back where the university has to ensure that the student has funding, you can't just admit someone. This normally means that the student has to be employed at the university for the whole study period.
