This is a nice story for a Monday, not because it was particularly difficult, but because sometimes having to come up with solutions for clients with absolutely zero IT budget is surprisingly satisfying.
The story goes back a couple of years and involves four free™ data storage providers, security/age, archivers/par2cmdline-turbo, and figuring out how to distribute the PAR2 files so that (rather prophetically) any two sites would be enough to recover the data.
That setup allowed us to download some pretty important old documentation today.
There are a few side quests I’m leaving out that would make for entertaining subplots, such as finding the encryption key, or how one of the providers changed its TOS and deleted the account without warning, while another wouldn't let us reset the account credentials.
But, you know, that's a story for another day.
Remember, #OwnYourData #SelfHost
