I hope you'll roll back the commit or at least make a separate public post detailing what this is and why it was done (why would any instance even use a legacy client? Element X exists).

I'm not accusing you of anything, but what if this hash contains a hidden vulnerability that could execute some code? After the backdoor in xz utils and the development of AI, this doesn't seem so crazy.
