I have also been reading Frankenstein (1830 version) with illustrations by Bernie Wrightson (while listening to Alexandre Desplat's soundtrack for the film), & it is delightful to see how strongly both the book & the illustrations influenced del Toro's film.
I read Frankenstein more than 15 years ago & at the time I found it dull. This time around, with del Toro's imagination to help me enter the spirit of the thing, I am riveted.
