I wish there was a middle ground between smartphones and dumbphones, like a phone where most chat and direct personal communication apps are available, but without the more generalist computer-in-your-pocket capabilities, and without social media... But of course when you start to think more closely about it, you realise that the difference between "chat app" and "social media app" is not so well-defined, and of course if you want to support a variety of chat apps you will need to support installing arbitrary apps, and then go back into smartphone territory

Maybe in a world where protocol interoperability would be the norm this would be possible, but sadly that's not the one we live in
